Water - L.C. Fire / Concept

[Eleventh Plateau Festival / Hydra's Historical Museum / 8 July-4 September 2011]

With the title Water-LC-Fire we attempt to depict/perform the dialectics between the elements Water/Fire.

The title refers to the great poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen, who spent some time of his life in Hydra and who is connected to the element of fire through a tragi-comic story: in his anger, he once cursed the house of the artist Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas (“I wish your house burned down”) because of a misunderstanding, and a few days later he saw it burning from a distance and thought it was because of his curse! (In reality, it was only a small field next to the house that had caught fire due to the caretaker’s carelessness).

The Creative Workshop FIXATIF WORKS (led by the visual artist Eleanna Martinou and the poet/author George-Icaros Babassakis) is preparing a complex project incorporating elements from painting, sculpture, poetry and philosophy. Motivated by the above-mentioned event in Hydra at the beginning of the 1960s – an event which is mentioned in Leonard Cohen’s biography – we attempt to reflect on the dialectics between Water/Fire.

We will present:
a] An event consisting of a representation of the dialectics between Water/Fire through sculpture in motion
b] A fictive wandering through the land, the sky, and the water of Hydra
c] A made up pseudo-document / «scrapbook» including pictures, manuscripts, plans, sketches, which will serve both as the Journal of the Water-LC-Fire project and as a means of contemplation on the meaning of Art today.

The Creative Workshop FIXATIF WORKS, which was established in the winter of 2010-11, aims at the creative study of the interplay among the Arts, the blending of Arts and Science, and the constructive discourse between Art and Philosophy.

P.S. The Creative Workshop FIXATIF WORKS draws its inspiration for the project Water-LC-Fire from the following position/document:
Note on In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni

All of the film (with the help of the images, but also in the text of the "commentary") is built on the theme of water. Thus, one cites in it the poets of the flow of everything (Li Po, Omar Khayyam, Heraclitus, Bossuet, Shelley?), who all have spoken of water: it is time.
Secondarily, there is the theme of fire: the flash of the instant: it is the revolution, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, youth, love, negation in the night, the Devil, the battles and the "uncompleted enterprises" in which men go to die, dazzled as "voyagers who pass"; and the desire in this night of the world ("nocte consumimur igni").
But the water of pent-up time carries away the fire and extinguishes it. Thus, the brilliant youth of Saint-Germaine-des-Pres, the fire of the assault of the burning "Light Brigade" that drowned in the coursing water of the century when it advanced "under the cannon of time" . . . .

ELEVENTH PLATEAU FESTIVAL

The project Eleventh Plateau examines a meticulous kind of compositional practice in which the machinery of nature and the machinery of art become one, in eleven different “sites-terrains” in the Is/land of Hydra and Dokos ( Ancient Aperopia). With the collaboration of artists, architects, environmentalists, archeologists and community involvement an interdisciplinary practice and discourse on the subject of eco-aesthetics, ecosystems, landscape reconstruction and its meaning for traditional cultural heritage will be instigated.

Eleventh Plateau operates in‐between the realities and different layers of the island: the archeological past, contemporary economic culture, the excluded and the popular. The project is engaging meditation on landscape, zoology (animal/human interrelations), land art and shifts in the representation of nature.
